Using Blogs in my Classroom

Although I have never used blogging in my classroom, I do feel that it would be a great means of communicate between school and home. If I were to use blogging in this manner, I would post important dates such as test dates and assignments that are due for parents to be up to date. I would also use it to ask for any suggestions or questions that parents may have about things that are going on in the classroom or any concerns they may have regarding their student.

I would also use blogging as a means of displaying all star students either for a job well done in class or great behavior. Through using blogging in this way, I feel that it can increase student motivation because students will be able to see their name posted and the reason they are being displayed as an all star student. I also feel that it will allow parents to get involved in their child's education because it would be every parents dream to see their child's name posted.

I teach 3rd grade in which I teach math and science. This departmentalization is something new for me this year but I do enjoy it thoroughly.

  1. Hi Tiffany,

I think it is great that you want to use blogs for communication. Do all of your students have access to the internet? Do you think all of your parents would want their child's name listed on a blog? I am not trying to be a "negative Nelly", but I am just thinking as a parent.
I do think posting math and science news would be a great way to keep your parents updated on the content being taught.

  2. Hi Ellen,
Student access to the internet has been a great concern for me. I teach in a low income school and many of my students do not have access to the internet at home therefore no, not all of my students have internet access.

I do not have any children therefore I have never thought about parent's feel on having their child's name posted on a blog. Before doing this, I would send a note home explaining to parents what the process would consist of and have them sign a permission form stating that they give me permission to post their child's name on the blog. Thanks for that input because I would have never thought of it in that aspect.

One of my main goals for a blog would be to keep my parents updated on things that are going on in the classroom and also for getting ideas or resources from other educators.
